Klaus Hempel Desk Lamp

Materials: Ochre-beige painted round base with a big built-in switch in the middle. Metal goose-neck (iron) inside a brown flexible plastic tube. Two brown plastic lids, one on top, one for the switch. Cast iron counterweight inside the base. Ochre-beige painted round aluminium lampshade. Bakelite E27 socket.

Height: 42 cm / 16.53” – adjustable

Lampshade: ∅ 17 cm / 6.69”

Base: ∅ 16 cm / 6.29”

Electricity: 1 x E27 bulb, 1 x 100 watt maximum, 110/220 volt.
Any type of light bulb can be used, not a specific one preferred.

Period: 1970s, 1980s – Mid-Century Modern.

Designer: Klaus Hempel.

Manufacturer: Walter Hustadt GmbH & Co. KG Leuchten, Am Schindellehm 7-9, 59755 Arnsberg, Germany.

Other versions: Made in several colours. This one is model V3925/01. Some variations of this lamp were also made with a different lampshade. Also a brass version was produced.

This desk lamp was also sold by the Dutch company Herda.

Hustadt-Leuchten

Hustadt-Leuchten was founded in September 1962 as Walter Hustadt GmbH & Co. KG Leuchten. Not much is know about it. The company officially ended business in may 2014. It went bankrupt some 5 years before. Hustadt-Leuchten always produced high quality lights. You can find a few lamps on this website.

Klaus Hempel

Klaus Hempel designed several lamps for Hustadt-Leuchten. He also designed beautiful lamps for the famous Gebr. Kaiser & Co. Leuchten, company, also from Germany.

This desk lamp in another colour won the iF-Design Award, Discipline product in 1983. It is model 3927/015. This one is in all probability a bit older. This desk lamp was designed in the late 70’s.

Hustadt is also a small German town that was build in the late 1960s as a model neighbourhood according to the general urban standards, to fulfil the requirements for approximately 6000 inhabitants. Hustadt is build on the edge of the city of Bochum. It’s surrounded by woods and fields on the one side, and offshoots of the enormous campus of the Ruhr University, as well as other housing areas on the other side.

A Klaus Hempel desk lamp was used as a prop in the 2018 American neo-noir thriller film Terminal. Starring Margot Robbie, Simon Pegg and Mike Myers.
