Any type of light bulb can be used, but a white, opaque or frosted one is preferred. It gives the best result with this light.

These type of lights were made for many years. The origin is vague, but they were presumably first made in France and Italy. Off course the design is based on the typical candlestick lanterns, but there was a revival of this design in the 1950s.
This one is made in the 1970s. Not so obvious because in that period the popularity was long gone. It is possible that the electricity has been redone in the ’70s, but I guess not.
