Murano Companies - Vetri Murano (VM) Labels

This page lists the company numbers that participated in Veneziavetro, a consortium promoting Murano glass since 1981. Please note that not all glassmakers were involved. For example, you will never find one of these labels on pieces by FontanaArte or Vistosi. These companies sometimes used labels mentioning Murano, but not the official Vetri Murano numbers.

Over time, some lighting manufacturers worked with different Murano glass suppliers. For instance, you may come across Kalmar lamps with an 014 label (from AV Mazzega) and others with an 048 label (from Leucos). However, an 048 label does not automatically mean your lamp is by Kalmar or Leucos – it could just as easily be Artemide or Arteluce. The key is always the lamp itself: its design, style, and period. In this case, the glassmaker for these companies was Leucos.

The same situation occurs with 012, where multiple company names are linked, but the actual glassmaker was Aureliano Toso. In some cases, the manufacturer is harder to identify, as numbers appear to have been shared.

When multiple company names appear under one number in the list below, the company marked with a red “X” is the actual glass furnace. The others are lighting brands or resellers who used glass from that furnace.

Originally, the numbers consisted of two digits. Later, a zero was added at the front (e.g. 44 became 044), but the companies themselves remained the same.

I have not included images of the labels here. Apart from the number, the labels all look the same. They are already shown in the Labels & Logos section, and adding them again would not add much value – it would only slow down this page. I also do not know exactly how long the sequence continues; the last one I have recorded is 57.

The Vetri Murano labels were used until the early 2000s. In 2002, new colored labels were introduced; these are listed on the right for completeness. Since 2016, labels with QR codes have been in use.

At the bottom of this page you will find links to Facebook groups and websites with more information about Murano glass labels. These resources are especially useful if you are researching glass objects, rather than lighting.

Note regarding VM number 005

A Vetri Murano label with the number 05 has been documented on an octagonal Murano mirror often attributed to Fratelli Barbini. Although the mirror was reportedly sold at the AVEM furnace premises, Mr. Bruno Cimitan (AVEM) confirmed that these mirrors were not produced by AVEM but were offered for sale there due to business relations between AVEM and Fratelli Barbini.

Additional examples of Murano figurines carrying the VM 05 label appear identical to pieces photographed inside the AVEM premises. This confirms that objects marked 05 were at least circulating and sold via AVEM, but it does not prove production by AVEM itself.

This suggests that 05 does not belong to AVEM. It remains possible that 05 could represent an earlier or alternative VM number associated with Fratelli Barbini before the confirmed 027 registration, but this has not yet been conclusively documented. Further label evidence is required.

Note regarding VM number 009

A number of objects bearing the Vetri Murano label VM 009 have been documented, including pieces signed L. de Rai and executed by G. Signoretto.

One sculpture carries an inscription reading “disegno di L. de Rai – esecuzione di G. Signoretto – Mazzega IVM – Murano”. This may indicate a connection with R. Mazzega IVM, which appears among the furnaces that joined the Vetri Murano consortium.

If this reading is correct, VM number 009 could possibly be associated with R. Mazzega IVM rather than with the later AV Mazzega (VM 014).

At present, however, the exact attribution of VM 009 remains uncertain and further documentation is required.

VM 024 – Barbini / Pagnin & Bon

The VM 024 label appears on objects associated with both Vetreria Alfredo Barbini and Pagnin & Bon Murano.

Barbini was a well-known Murano furnace, while Pagnin & Bon specialised in cold-working and engraving (inciso a mano). Several pieces exist where a VM 024 sticker appears together with either a Barbini label or a Pagnin & Bon label.

This strongly suggests that both companies may have collaborated on certain objects. In many cases on Murano, the glass body was produced by a furnace (such as Barbini) and later engraved or finished by a specialised workshop like Pagnin & Bon.

Because the VM sticker could be applied at different stages of production or distribution, it is possible for the same VM number to appear with both names.

More documented examples will help clarify the exact relationship, but current evidence indicates a production / finishing collaboration between the two workshops.

VM 004 – Vetreria LAG Srl

This number appears on glass used for lighting, including examples on Leucos lamps (e.g. the “Golf” model).
Vetreria LAG supplied glass to several lighting manufacturers, including Selene Illuminazione, Zonca and apparently also Leucos. As with other VM numbers, the label identifies the glass furnace, not the brand that sold the lamp.
